SWOT Analysis Generator

March 28, 2026

The SWOT Analysis Generator produces a comprehensive strategic analysis that goes beyond listing items in four quadrants. It identifies genuine strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, then generates cross-quadrant strategies (SO, WO, ST, WT) that turn the analysis into an actionable plan.

Business owners, product managers, consultants, and MBA students use this template when evaluating a new venture, assessing competitive position, preparing for strategic planning sessions, or completing business school assignments. It works for companies of any size, from startups to enterprise divisions.

The prompt produces a higher-quality SWOT than most manual attempts because it enforces specificity (no vague items like "strong brand"), requires evidence for each point, and automatically generates the cross-strategies matrix that most people skip. The cross-strategies section is where the real strategic value lives: it connects internal factors to external factors to produce concrete next steps.

The Prompt

Generate a comprehensive SWOT analysis for the following:

**Business/Project**: [BUSINESS NAME AND BRIEF DESCRIPTION, e.g., "CloudSync, a B2B SaaS file synchronization tool for small teams, launched 18 months ago"]
**Industry**: [INDUSTRY]
**Current Situation**: [RELEVANT CONTEXT, e.g., "50 paying customers, $15K MRR, 2 full-time employees, competing against Dropbox Business and Google Drive"]
**Goal of This Analysis**: [WHAT DECISION THIS WILL INFORM, e.g., "Deciding whether to pursue enterprise customers or double down on small teams"]

Generate the analysis with this structure:

### Strengths (Internal, Positive)
List 5-7 specific strengths. For each:
- The strength (specific, not generic)
- Evidence or reasoning (why this is a real advantage)
- How defensible it is (easy to copy vs. hard to replicate)

### Weaknesses (Internal, Negative)
List 5-7 specific weaknesses. For each:
- The weakness (be honest, not sugarcoated)
- Impact on the business (how it affects growth, revenue, or operations)
- Difficulty to address (quick fix vs. structural challenge)

### Opportunities (External, Positive)
List 4-6 opportunities. For each:
- The opportunity (specific market trend, gap, or event)
- Time sensitivity (emerging now, 6 months, 1-2 years)
- Resources required to capture it

### Threats (External, Negative)
List 4-6 threats. For each:
- The threat (specific, not vague "competition")
- Likelihood (low, medium, high)
- Potential impact (low, medium, high)

### Cross-Strategy Matrix
Generate actionable strategies by combining quadrants:
- **SO Strategies** (use Strengths to capture Opportunities): 2-3 strategies
- **WO Strategies** (address Weaknesses to capture Opportunities): 2-3 strategies
- **ST Strategies** (use Strengths to mitigate Threats): 2-3 strategies
- **WT Strategies** (address Weaknesses to defend against Threats): 2-3 strategies

### Priority Actions
Based on the analysis, list the top 3 strategic actions to take in the next 90 days, ranked by impact.

Usage Tips

  • Provide honest context: The analysis is only as good as the input. Include real numbers (revenue, team size, customer count) and genuine challenges. Sugarcoating the input produces a useless SWOT.
  • State the decision it should inform: "Deciding whether to raise funding" produces a very different analysis than "deciding which market segment to target." The goal focuses the output.
  • Challenge the output: For each strength, ask yourself "Is this really unique to us?" For each threat, ask "How likely is this in the next 12 months?" Push back on items that feel generic.
  • Focus on the cross-strategies: The four quadrants are inputs. The cross-strategy matrix is the output. Spend most of your review time on whether the strategies are actionable and specific.
