Before you paste: two non-negotiable rules

1. Student privacy is absolute. Consumer AI chatbots (the free tier of ChatGPT, standard Gemini, Claude.ai) retain prompts and may use them for training. Pasting anything that identifies a student, names, student IDs, grades tied to a name, IEP or 504 details, behavior records, photos, breaches student-privacy law (FERPA in the US, GDPR for minors in the EU, and local equivalents). For real work with student data, use an education or enterprise deployment with a contractual no-training commitment and the right compliance controls; Claude for Teachers, for example, ships with K-12 privacy terms and does not train on what teachers share [1]. Otherwise, de-identify completely before you prompt: strip every identifier and keep only the pedagogical shape ("a 9th-grade student reading two years below level"), never the person.

2. AI is not the teacher of record. These prompts draft, structure, and speed up. They do not hold the professional judgment. AI does not assign the grade, decide the accommodation, or replace the relationship with a student or family; you do. Models get grade levels wrong, misalign to your local curriculum, invent citations and reading levels, and state outdated standards with total confidence. Verify every fact, standard, and reading level against your curriculum, your district's policy, and an authoritative source before it reaches a student. And model the behavior you expect: if your school has an academic-integrity policy on AI, your own use should sit inside it. Treat AI as a tireless teaching assistant, never as the person in charge of learning.

How to actually use these

A prompt you run once and forget is worth little. A prompt that becomes part of your weekly routine compounds. Three moves separate teachers who get marginal value from AI from those who get real evenings back:

Save them. Every prompt that returns a usable draft goes into a personal prompt library tagged by grade and task. Next time you tune rather than start over.
